Jaffna Fort
🏰 Colonial Fortress · 17th Century
Jaffna Fort is the second-largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka and one of the finest examples of 17th-century European colonial military architecture in Asia. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1619, it was captured and significantly expanded by the Dutch VOC in 1658 into the star-shaped fortress you see today. The massive ramparts enclose a fascinating complex including the Queen's House, King's House, ruins of the Dutch Reformed Kruys Church, and underground tunnels. Walking along the ramparts at sunset offers one of the most photogenic views in all of Sri Lanka.
