Frequently Asked Questions About Fees

Are passport fees different for renewal vs. new application?

No, fees are the same whether you're applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one. Adults pay Rs. 10,000 and children pay Rs. 3,000 for normal processing, regardless of application type.

Can I pay in installments or get a discount?

No, passport fees must be paid in full at the time of application. There are no installment options, discounts, or special rates available. The fees are set by the Department of Immigration and are the same for everyone.

What happens if my payment doesn't go through?

If online payment fails, you'll receive an error message and your application won't be submitted. You can try again with a different card or choose the “Pay at Bank” option instead. If money was deducted from your account but you didn't get confirmation, contact your bank and the Immigration Department hotline (1962) with your transaction details.

Is the urgent service fee worth it?

It depends on your situation. Urgent service (Rs. 20,000 for adults) is worth it if you have immediate travel needs, a visa appointment deadline, or an emergency. However, if you have 3+ months before you need your passport, normal processing (Rs. 10,000) saves you Rs. 10,000. Plan ahead when possible to avoid the urgent fee.

Do children under 16 need to pay the adult fee when they turn 16?

No, not immediately. If a child's passport was issued before age 16 and is still valid after they turn 16, it remains valid until expiry. However, when it's time to renew after age 16, they will pay the adult fee (Rs. 10,000) for a new 10-year passport. They'll also need to provide biometric data again at age 16.

Can I get a refund if my application is rejected?

No, passport fees are non-refundable even if your application is rejected due to incorrect/incomplete documents or other issues. This is why it's crucial to ensure all documents are correct and complete before submitting and paying. If your application is rejected, you'll need to fix the issues and apply (and pay) again.
